Running, blocking, and tackling his way to the top, varsity football player Michael Roach was named the Southeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year as well as earning second-team All-SEC status on the Hawks’ offense tight end. Roach’s 2013 record of 131⁄2 sacks, 17 tackles, and four touch- downs helped his team finish their second varsity season 8-3. Strong performances like this come only through the hard work and mental strength of a dedicated athlete.

“There is no better feeling than playing football under the lights on a Friday night. It’s an experience that can’t be explained, but it just gives you a rush that is unlike anything else,” said Michael Roach, a General Studies senior and No.14 Hawk varsity football player.

The season was filled with highs and lows, from Indian Trail beating the No.1 ranked team in the state, Stevenson, 15-14, to losing a hard fought game against Franklin High School 20-23 in the second round of play-offs. Roach felt the team un- derachieved.

“We were better than just being in the second round of the playoffs,” Roach continued, “But all

good things must come to an end, and it was a blast being with my friends during this season. It was the most fun season I’ve ever had in any sport.”

Aside from the fun had with friends, training for these games is no easy feat. An average football practice goes from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. For Roach, there is no off-season. He commits to a varsity sport fall (football), winter (basketball), and spring (track & field).

On top of demanding practices and matches, Roach also has a busy class schedule and can get overwhelmed at times. With the support of his coaches and family, he is able to balance all of them and achieve in both the classroom and on the field.

In the future, Roach plans to continue his sports career by playing Division 1 football in college. With the talent, strength, and mind he possesses, he now only needs to decide which school has offered him the best opportunity.
