Mr. McDorman is a familiar face at our school after only being here at ITA for five years, known both as an engaging history teacher and as the dedicated coach of the tennis team. But what truly sets the self proclaimed “History Nerd” apart is his commitment to encouraging students to challenge themselves and embrace new experiences.
“I preach for students to get out of their comfort zone, and this was the perfect opportunity to do the same thing,” Mr. McDorman explains. This philosophy is not just something he tells his students—it’s something he practices himself, both in the classroom and on the tennis court. As a history teacher, Mr. McDorman brings the past to life. He even states, “I’ve always been a history nerd, even when I was a kid.” His lectures are known for encouraging students to think beyond textbooks and connect history to the real world through his lectures. He often incorporates creative projects and discussions that push students to think critically and share their perspectives on the subject.
On the tennis court, Coach McDorman applies the same mindset. Funny enough, he says, “My dream was actually college football.” He motivates his players to try new strategies and develop resilience, whether they’re beginners picking up a racket for the first time or seasoned athletes aiming to improve their game. His approach helps students discover strengths they never knew they had.
Students often say that Mr. McDorman’s support has helped them build confidence, both academically and athletically. He leads by example. He reminds everyone that growth happens when you’re willing to step outside your comfort zone.
Through the years, Mr. McDorman and coaching have made a lasting impact, inspiring students to take on challenges and never settle for less than their best.
