The Senior Showcase is an Indian Trail Academy tradition for the Communications seniors to show all of the skills they have learned and display pieces they have been working on for the last four years.
Sarah Gapinski, an Indian Trail art teacher and the person in charge of this year’s showcase, describes the showcase as a way for the seniors to show what they have learned and are proud of.
The showcase included many forms of creativity such as traditional art, graphic design, multimedia, creative writing, advertising elements and journalism. All of which are things the seniors have been learning the past four years.
This year there were a few changes made to the Senior Showcase. The art was displayed in the upper gym during the school day as well as at night. Students of Indian Trail were able to see the show as well as it being open to the public at night.
A majority of the Communications seniors agreed that the student body being able to see the art they have been working on for the last four years is nerve racking but a nice addition. This year’s communications seniors had a lot of amazing pieces to be proud of.
According to Nai Herrera, a Communications senior, one of the coolest parts of the Senior Showcase is that Ms. Gapinski works with local businesses to find professionals to speak with each senior about the field they hope to study in college.
“Meeting people who work in the jobs we hope to one day have and using our art as a conversations starter is really fun,” said Herrera.
Communications seniors have been working hard all year on their portfolios, bringing in pieces they created throughout high school as well as creating new ones.
“We have been working on portfolio pieces all year and exploring what kind of mediums and subjects we want to work with,” said Devin Kraemer, Communications senior.
Everyone’s portfolio includes 10 to 12 breath pieces and 10 to 12 concentrations pieces.
“A breath is showing that you have strength in knowing the elements and principle of art. Concentration is showing that you have an understanding of one concept that you enjoy and you are exploring many different ideas with it,” Gapinski said, when she was asked to explain the two elements of her class.
Each student has to come up with a concentration along with his or her breath works. For the concentra- tion, students have chosen many different things. Some chose to focus on the field they hope to study, such as architecture. Others focused their concentration on their hobbies, like dancing.
Herrera chose to follow a more artistic path with her concentration and focuses on combining disaster with beauty.
“I enjoy coming to class every day and letting my creativity come through in every brush stroke I make,” said Herrera.
The showcase is an important part of senior year for Communications students.
“It’s time for us to show how we have grown artistically from freshman year to now as far as our skills and comprehension of all the subject matter in art,” said Kraemer.
Seniors can come together and show all the hard work and dedication they have put into their art and show the benefits of the Communications Academy.
