Resident Evil 7 does not disappoint, new game revives survival horror genre

Resident Evil 7 is a survival horror game developed and published by Capcom. It was released in January 2017.

After the first Resident Evil, that was defined as survival horror, the series started taking a turn towards action shooter and took the horror out of the picture. Luckily, they made a full 360 and went back to the classic survival horror aspect with Resident Evil 7, which is also the first in the series to be in first person.

You play as Ethan Winters, the protagonist, a husband who has set out to find his wife Mia, who has been missing for three years. After you receive a message from her, you find yourself on a rundown plantation in Dulvey, La., looking for a way to break into the house. After finding an abandoned van, a cow corpse shrine with hanging saws, and a human corpse, you’d think Ethan would call the police, but nope, he keeps going until he finds Mia locked in a cell in the basement. It seems like the game could finish early, but Mia is a little bit psycho, and by a little, I mean she puts a screwdriver through your hand and cuts it off with a chainsaw.

Mia’s not the only person willing to sit down and have a little talk with you. The Baker family is also excited to meet you and even strap you down in a chair to eat a special feast that Marguerite, Mama Baker, made special for you. She also has a huge bug collection that she likes to show you.

Jack Baker is the man of the house. He likes to take a drive in his garage, and come back no matter how many times you kill him, either him being impaled, shot in the face, or sawed in half, he will always come back. Lucas Baker is Jack and Marguerite’s son. He enjoys throwing parties and has a kink for games.

Lastly we have Zoe Baker, Lucas’s sister. She is the only sane one in this game, trying to survive.

This game has many cool new aspects, like the blocking attacks, first person, and a sense of humor. Creators also brought back some old mechanics like the inventory system, puzzles, and the magical box that transports your items.

The story is interesting to follow, but the animation is a little sluggish. Also, after you get your hand cut off, think you killed your wife, or get a metallic quill through your waist, you think Ethan would react more.

Either way the game is good and brings back the classic while doing something different; creators gave themselves a new branch off point to start a new chapter in the series. After you finish the game, you can play the free downloadable content, Not a Hero, or buy the other DLC’s. After playing Resident Evil 7, I give this game a five out of five stars.
