The student parking lot does not have the best reputation here at Indian Trail. Every once in a while, you’ll hear about some kind of commotion in the parking lot. Whether it’s a car getting hit or drivers having no awareness of pedestrians, there’s always a new problem with the lot.
Many students here have strong opinions about the way things run, some more than others. One student in particular had a lot to say. “The parking lot is very dangerous and scary,” says senior Ryley Knowlton.
At Indian Trail, it is a known fact that the parking lot is disliked and dreaded. “The parking lot is honestly the worst part of my day,” senior Athourina Audicho says. It really affects the mood of our students. In response to this, many students try to avoid the parking lot. They avoid it by parking somewhere else or just carpooling with friends.
Some think that the students are the problem. “I feel like they don’t care about others and are never aware,” says Athourina. Many say that there have been times when students have almost been hit due to the lack of awareness from drivers. There have also been times when cars have actually been hit by other students.
One student shared how her car got hit by another student, and no one wanted to take accountability for it. This could be another problem in itself. “I wouldn’t have been as mad if the person apologized and tried to make up for it,” Athourina says. I feel like this shows us that if people took accountability for things like this, then there would be less hatred and stress surrounding the parking lot. Situations like this truly make the hatred grow. It makes students feel unsafe and on edge all the time.
Due to all this uncertainty, some students believe that there should be changes that could help. “There should definitely be some rules,” says Ryley Knowlton. Maybe some rules might affect how students drive in the parking lot. Some people don’t make a change until there are consequences involved. So maybe if the school enforced some more rules about the parking lot, then it would run smoothly and be less stressful on the students.
Overall there definitely needs to be a change. Whether it’s on the students’ or on the school, someone needs to do something. Students should not have to worry about their cars being damaged or about having someone hit them while walking cause they weren’t being cautious enough. We, as students, should try our best to keep the parking lot as safe as possible. Just because it’s a parking lot does not mean you can drive recklessly. You should be driving safely and wisely at all times.
