The Indian Trail wrestling team has started its second season with a solid start.
Even with 2-4 record, which is down from last year, the team is still very good.
“Last year it might be perceived we did better, but with players all around the same weight class, it’s hard to spread them out and we are usually at a disadvantage,” said Jameel Massouh, Indian Trail wrestling coach.
The team has a lot of talented wrestlers bunched in the 152-pound weight class and in wrestling they are only allowed one varsity wrestler per weight class.
“Technique wise and skill we are a lot better this year,” Massouh said.
The team has two state ranked wrestlers in Izaak Simar and Jacob Simar.
Izaak is ranked No. 6 for the 170-pound weight class and Jacob is ranked No. 12 for the 195-pound weight class. Other top performers are Justin and
Josie Rodriguez, Ed Nixon, and Anthony Freeze. Also newcomer to the team, Lamar Black has wrestled really well.
“Wrestling is a very hard sport to learn, but Lamar is a sponge. You teach him something and he will do it right away,” said Massouh.
With the regular season the team looks to end strong. The team looks to bring their best now. They have the Southeast Conference meet, then regionals, sectionals, and state, for those who can make it that far.
