Director Christopher Nolan, known for being an excellent craftsman and visionary, and who is also responsible for creating widely known films such as Inception and the very successful Dark Knight trilogy, now brings us Interstellar, a film that takes the au- dience on an exhilarating exploration through the stars of our galaxy and far deep into our universe.
Stunning, exciting, beautiful, and at times breathtaking, Interstellar is most definitely a Nolan film at its core. The film takes us to the distant future where mankind is spending their final time on Earth. Famine has swept through the planet causing widespread starva- tion amongst all on Earth. A group of a chosen few, including the main protagonist Cooper, played by actor Mat- thew McConaughey, are sent into the far reaches of space in order to save humanity as a whole.
Interstellar’s creative design and form allows the audience to witness Nolan’s genius on screen. His use of practical effects and filming absolutely immerse you into the universe he has created. It becomes immediately clear that the vision for this film stands tall with a strong imaginative foundation that the audience comes to love and get lost in. The story given to us is one that takes us on an entertaining, emotional, roller coaster. Along with the amazingly created universe, we find the science that is implemented into the film. For the most part, all works within the story, but flaws can be discovered amid the use of scientific theory. One may come to find himself slowly unraveling the science holding the film together as it progresses, causing the film to fall apart. Many aspects and ideas that are created for the story leave the audience asking questions which are quickly hidden and dismissed, leaving us scratching our heads. The film sets out boundaries and parameters for itself once diving into its science and reality of the story, but we come to find these walls established early on crumble towards the final act of the film.
At the end, one can find oneself either irritated, or amazed but also bewildered at the climax. Although, these flaws and gaps of the story don’t necessarily disconnect you completely from the film. The movie still keeps its rich, detailed story stable as it rides along the concept it creates for itself. Given the circumstances, Interstellar is a science fiction film and must be understood as one as it dives into the unknown realm of the universe.
Following the story, we have the many notable actions and behaviors from characters that satisfy and annoy. Many characters make choices and decisions that can be found to be completely irrational. Some decisions seem to go completely against the logic of the situation and alter the conclusion into something unneeded
Within the film we find a great cast, as expected coming from Nolan. Each cast member fit their part as needed and helped drive the story. All actors gave a satisfying performance which can give each person watching an emotional run. Most importantly, the film succeeds in providing an amaz- ing story delivering pure and powerful themes. Ultimately, we see the hard- ships, success, and the love not only for the survival of humanity, but love between a father and his daughter. The brilliance, scale, and craftsmanship of this film is admirable. In the end, un- derstanding of the story and emotions will play a strong part in a personal de- bate of the film. Although not perfect, Interstellar is an amazing experience nonetheless. I rate this movie a 4.1 out of five stars.
