It’s an October Friday night and more than 2,000 people pack in a brightly lit football stadium. The atmosphere is alive, from the students, to the parents, and even the avid sports fans who just came to watch. Big signs advertise different businesses around the city. Both teams chant different cheers to support their team to victory. You have this feeling going all through your body, but you’re not quite sure what it is. It’s the feeling and emotions that sports bring to every community. These feelings and emotions can either bond a group of people or even separate them. The ability to give all your support for a team is an incredible thing to do.
“Sports give people in the community something to do. It keeps people busy and keeps kids active,” said Indian Trail teacher Kelli Chesick.
Today high school sports participation is at an all-time high. About 7.6 million students nationwide participate in sports. Even more participate in sports outside of school as well. This large amount of participation creates buzz around cities and gets the stands packed with not only students and parents.
“Sports have such a positive effect on the community, everyone supports each other and has a great time,” said Indian Trail student Zach Detloff.
Stands have been packed at record highs recently, especially for the most played sport: football. Recently more than 46,000 fans packed Texas stadium to watch a high school game.
It’s not even high school sports that create this type of attention. Professional sports are being watched more often every day. This is an extreme positive for the community. Not only are your favorite teams making money, but also different businesses in your community are profiting as well.
Restaurants and bars can benefit from your going to their establishment to watch the game and local sport shops can benefit from your buying your different jerseys and other spirit items for your team.
Sports is and always will be part of our way of life.
Even if you don’t like sports, you have to admit the buzz for it right now is amazing.
