Walking down the main hallway on the ground floor of Indian Trail High School & Academy, one will see the many examples of art from Sarah Gapinski’s classes. From teaching Intro to Art, Sculpting, and Communications Correlations, Gapinski’s students always seem to be doing something interesting.

“My favorite project is teaching the kids how to do self portraits. They act like they hate it and we all hate it, but I see them learning as they’re doing it and that’s what I like to see,” Gapinski said.

When asked to select a student to feature for this issue of The Pulse, Gapinski had no problem in selecting Devin Kraemer. A Communications Academy senior, Kraemer has been partaking in art classes since kindergarten, and has enjoyed them specifically using black ink over drawings.

“I like using ink, black ink over drawings so it contrasts and I can add detail,” Kraemer said.

Although he doesn’t draw much in his free time, he loves to draw for school, receiving good grades on his art.

“I moved a lot so I started in school definitely, because a lot of my projects would involve drawing and coloring something and then I guess I just did it well according to my friends and it got attention. So my friends were encouraging in that way,” said Kraemer.

He plans to pursue a radio/televion/film major at University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh next fall, already gaining some broadcast journalism skills working on Indian Trail’s morning announcements show The Trail Mix.

Kraemer is not exactly sure whether he wants to continue in art or not, but he said he is keeping his options opened.
