Hollywood craves football … again

Remember the Los Angeles Rams? Chances are no, because that football team only existed from 1946-1994. The Rams were the first team to play in Los Angeles. Well, there was a team called the Los Angeles Buccaneers, but it was primarily an on-the-road team and did not play games in L.A., nor was it a part of the National Football League. Los Angeles is the second most populated media-city in the United States, and California is the most populated state. Hollywood is known for entertainment, stars, and just excitement.

So if the NFL is truly America’s sport, why is there no football team in Los Angeles?

When ESPN asked the NFL Commissioner where a team in Los Angeles stands right now, Commissioner Roger Goodell said, “Right now our focus is on

the process, making sure we’re evaluating the opportunities in their existing markets and mak- ing sure we understand that — and also making sure that we understand what it takes to be successful in Los Angeles long- term.”

Why does the NFL need a team in Los Angeles?

The benefits are endless. Social media, economical enhancement around ownership, chance for players to receive endorsements and overall more money for the NFL. The NFL is already the richest league in the United States with $9 billion made last year. Roger Goodell’s dream for the year 2027 is $27 billion, according to Forbes.

As it stands right now, there are three teams reported in hav- ing interest in relocating to Los Angeles, according to ESPN. They are the St. Louis Rams, the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders, with St. Louis being the most possible.

The Rams have a stadium plan and they already own land in Los Angeles. Owner Stan Kroenke purchased 60 acres of land in Inglewood, Calif., which is on the west side of Los Angeles. ESPN broke this news on Feb. 1, 2015. It has been about three months and they have not done anything yet.

Moving to Los Angeles could have its downside for a team like the San Diego Chargers. Quarterback Philip Rivers has expressed behind closed doors that he won’t re-sign with the team because of the intent of moving to Los Angeles. Rivers is coming off a career year, despite the team not going far. They hope to complete the piece and get back to the playoffs this season.
