In early March, 47 Republican senators signed a letter to Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that Congress would revoke any nuclear deal that Iran would reach with the Obama administration. This has brought nothing but yelping from the Democrats.
This isn’t the first time that the Republicans have shown open disrespect to the president.
Republicans ignored diplomatic protocol when the House of Representatives invited Is- raeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before a joint session of Congress without even asking the White House for permission.
The senators weren’t lying in their letter; they were at least honest to the people of Iran that they shouldn’t bother making a nuclear deal with the president since they will just prevent it anyways. So kudos to them for being honest.
The letter also allowed the GOP senators to be some of the most condescending people on the planet with a brief lecture on how democracy works in the United States.
“It has come to our attention while observing your nuclear negotiations with our govern- ment that you may not fully understand our constitutional system,” the letter read. “Presi- dent Obama will leave office in January 2017, while most of us will remain in office well beyond then perhaps decades…”
Presidents may come and go, but senators last forever. They may be crazy and irrational at times, but they somehow manage to keep their power. Something the Ayatollah will never comprehend, even if he has held the position of Iran’s supreme leader since 1989.
What’s amazing is that this was all done by a freshman senator, Tom Cotton of Arkansas. Somehow, he managed to get the majority of the Republican senators to undermine President Obama. How very persuasive of Cotton.
Many Democrats believe that what the Republican senators have done is treason and an insult to the president.
But the Dems shouldn’t be so quick to start pointing any fingers. Back in 2007, then Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi met with known dictator Bashar alAssad, which was against what President George Bush’s administration wanted.
Democrats such as Hillary Clinton and Senator Dianne Feinstein praised Pelosi for her actions, but eight years later, they are furious over a very similar interference in foreign policy that the Republicans have done.
This is all just partisan politics as usual. No matter how evil the president or Congress thinks Iran is, they would rather deal with the Ayatollah than each other. Now there’s someone they can work with!
