Throughout the month of January the Kenosha Unified School District Theater put on the musical, Godspell, here at Indian Trail High School & Academy. Godspell is about Jesus, played by Mitchell Jones, who goes into a homeless alley and between him and a group of followers, they tell stories from the Bible with music. The musical featured many soloists, including Autumn Voyles and Maddie Orr.
Overall the musical was great, even though it was a bit confusing at first. The songs were very well performed. Songs such as “O, Bless the Lord, My Soul” sung by Voyles, were outstanding with a rock and roll sound to it. “All for the Best” sung by Jones and Gavin Russell, who played Judas, were entertaining and funny, featuring tap dancing.
The actors did very well as their characters, throughout the changing stories within the musical. Russell made the character Judas almost untrustworthy throughout, and Hunter Turvaville portrayed the character Herb hilariously. Meanwhile, the stagecraft classes here at IT constructed the homeless alley setting for the play with features like graffiti covered walls.
The musical concluded with people in the audience crying as the dead Jesus was carried around the auditorium by a few of his followers. But after the musical was over, the whole cast was on stage along with the director, Robert Allen, when the stage manager, Skylar Vernezze, came onto stage and presented Allen, Justin Hauke, the technical director, and Olivia Kraus, make-up designer, with gifts from the whole cast. It was amazing to see the final performance and feel how happy the cast was together.
