Recycling is a key component to keeping the environment clean and keeping all of Earth’s plants and animals alive. Like so many businesses and residents around Kenosha, Indian Trail High School & Academy is now trying to do its part and recycle.
“We do recycle but we just got the recycling dumpsters put in place last year,” said Megan Awe, the founder of the club Teen Green and Indian Trail’s ecology teacher.
The program is still new and still in its infancy.
“And it is an extra added job for our custodial staff who already have a ton to do at the end of the day,” Awe said.
The ecology classes have created boxes for recycling and partnered up with another class here, which focuses on job skills. That class is now in charge of the recycling program. The job skills class comes around Mondays and
Wednesdays to pick up the boxes of recyclable items. But the recycling boxes often have items that are not recyclable because many people are unaware of what is recyclable.
Some materials that cannot be recycled include granola bar wrappers, chip bags, and gum wrappers. Some things that are recyclable are copy paper, un- used paper towels, and water bottles. Along with the cap preferably on top of the water bottle because other animals may think the cap is another small organ- ism and eat it.
Many people think that it is okay that they do not recycle because they are just one person, but it adds up. Even recycling just one aluminum can produces enough energy to power a TV for three hours. According to Recycle Across America, the average person uses around 25,000 cans in a lifetime. So the next time there is an aluminium can, recycle it to save the environment.
