Indian Trail High School & Academy girls basketball team has had a rough year so far. At the time of writing this article the girls are 3-12 (1-7). The girls had a decent start to the season at 2-2, including a rout of Milwaukee Reagan High School 81-40, and a defensive 52-41 win against Westosha Central High School. After that though, the girls went on a long 7-game losing streak, including some pretty ugly losses against Oak Creek High School (loss of 46-115) and Franklin High School where they only mustered up 38 points. It’s not all bad though, the girls redeemed themselves a bit winning against Bradford High School 74-73 in the Hoops for Hope game on Jan. 9.

Junior guard Alena Tellez sank two free throws in the last seconds to give them the win. The team will have a good amount of players returning, but will have team captains senior forward Abby McGrain and senior guard Kendall Wilhelmson depart. Wilhelmson has definitely been carrying the team this season, averaging 21.0 points per game (PPG), while no other girl is even averaging double figures. Forwards Turea Hughes, Lauryn Lasticly, and Anna Scarlato are among the other seniors that will not return for 2019, though most of the seniors see limited action.

The girls team is much like the boys team in that they are both very young. The girls team has a lot of underclassmen, but still relies on senior leadership. IT girls basketball right now is stuck in a rut, like all good teams can be. Just two seasons ago Maddie Kaelber, Kenosha’s all-time leading scorer in girls basketball, was putting Indian Trail girls basketball in the news. Right now, it’s tough, but like every other good team, they’ll bounce back.
