Exploring Kenosha’s downtown charm and more

By Katrina Jansen-Buciuni, Editor in Chief

You probably saw the headline of this story and thought, “Is this some sort of joke? Kenosha is fun? Ha. No way..”

Well. I’m here to prove you wrong!

Kenosha has so many adventurous things to do. Coming from the girl who has grown up here all her life, you may learn a couple of things. Some may get me in trouble, some may bring joy and laughter, and some might just make you dislike Kenosha even more. So come along with me on this adventure, so we can experience it together.

Let’s start down by the lake. Good ole’ Lake Michigan, a great photography destination might I add. Let’s first mention the lighthouse, because typically if you talk to someone that’s not from around here, they address this city as the one with the huge red lighthouse. I honestly believe people take it for granted. We’re so lucky to have such an amazing landmark and a body of freshwater connected to it. You can take a drive down to the waterfront whenever you feel like it. But I do advise you not to get out of your car when it’s winter because the likelihood of you freezing every bone in your body is very high.

Swing along the side of the lake and embrace all the sculptures they’ve placed in the grass, because the artwork will grab your attention. Or go take that classic picture in front of the butterfly mural located directly behind Mike’s Chicken and Donuts. Make sure to grab a donut on your way, and maybe some chicken if you’re up to it.

Hey gentlemen, are you in need of a spiffy new bow tie? Or are you looking for that snazzy new suit to take your lady to prom? Well, you’re in luck. Take a stroll into Mike Bjorn’s Fine Clothing. I’m not a dude, but I love going in there to see all the different suit combinations, crazy sock patterns and stylish bow ties.

Let’s talk food. Hot dogs or comfort food?  Paninis or wraps? Or just a good cup of coffee? I’ve got four great places for you. They’re called Trolley Dogs, Frank’s Diner, The Buzz and, last but not least, Common Grounds. So let’s hop onto the trolley and take a swing around downtown and enjoy the ride. Remember ladies and gentlemen, make sure to keep all hands and feet inside the moving vehicle. Not joking, they will yell at you. Shh. I’m a good kid. I swear.

Looking for a tasteful Chicago-style hot dog? Well then Trolley Dogs is your place. How about the legendary “garbage plate” from Frank’s Diner on a Saturday morning? Yum. Sounds appetizing, right? Let me take a couple steps back and explain the “garbage plate.” This iconic dish served at Frank’s Diner is eggs, cheese, hash browns, your choice of meat and any other fixings you could imagine all thrown onto one plate. A plate that tastes like heaven, but looks like garbage, hence it’s called the garbage plate.

Want something lighter? Like a panini or sandwich wrap? Well, you’re in luck because The Buzz is just what you’re looking for, a small retro cafe connected to a bar. The Buzz is a very chill and relaxing place to grab a quick and appetizing meal. It also serves hot drinks like coffee and tea.

But if you’re looking for a place to grab a nice drink, then I’d turn around and head down the street to Common Grounds, a cute coffee shop located right off the lake. It also serves muffins and other sweet treats to tag along with your drink. I really enjoy coming to this coffee shop mostly because of the view. Whenever I go there, I always sit in the same exact spot, right by the very left window, closest to the wall. The table is kind of beat up, but it speaks character… You could stare out the windows for hours while drinking a comforting cup of vanilla chai tea, my personal favorite.

I could go on and on about all the places I cherish downtown. All the little tips and tricks because Kenosha is a place I’ve grown to love and cherish. It speaks for itself.

The look, the feeling, and the vibe it gives off. Everyone takes away something different when they go downtown. I just happen to find a sense of comfort, some of my greatest memories were made down there.
