Love, Simon empowers LGBT + community

On March 16, Love, Simon came out to everyone in the world.

The story follows Simon Spier (Nick Robinson), a high school student who struggles with his sexuality.  He lives a normal life, with a normal family and friends, Leah (Katherine Langford), Abby (Alexandra Shipp), and Nick (Jorge Lendeborg Jr.), but he hasn’t told anyone about his secret. He starts to build up his confidence when an anonymous post is written online about his secret under the name “Blue.” Simon replies to Blue, hiding his identity with the name “Jacques.”

When Simon forgets to log out his email on the school computer, theatre geek Martin (Logan Miller) finds Simon’s emails with Blue and blackmails him. Martin forces Simon to help him get with his crush, Abby, taunting him with the screenshots of the emails. All hell breaks loose and Simon is left crushed.

Don’t worry, I won’t give away who Blue is! This film was so beautiful and heartwarming. It was little things that made this movie great, like the sight of family and good friends, but also getting the inside scoop of what it was like to be Simon.

The acting in this film was fascinating, especially the lead actor, Robinson. He portrayed Simon so well and I became attached to him immediately, especially after a scene where he goes off on Martin. Langford showed her true colors with love and friends in this film and I couldn’t help but see Hannah Baker (13 Reasons Why) in her a few times. Shipp was a new face to me, but she was a cutie with sass and confidence, making her character fierce. Lendeborg Jr. was another fresh face to me and he portrayed Nick so well! He was silly and humorous and I felt like he was the character I related to the most.

Love, Simon will change the perspective of anyone who sees this movie. I cried at the end because it was so heartwarming and touching. There were some points that really made me rethink my own opinions. I am definitely seeing it again, and I encourage my friends who struggle with their sexuality to see it too!

On Twitter, thousands have written that they came out to family after seeing the movie. It was amazing to read the tweets about closeted teens finally being able to speak up about themselves because the movie was made for it.

I have some friends on Twitter who cried with joy after watching the film and it made my heart dance! The plot is fresh and I’m glad filmmakers finally brought this story to the big screen so viewers can see what it is like to be in Simon’s situation. It’s much harder than people think. I am sure plenty of people can relate to this story and I feel like this film boosted the confidence of many who would otherwise be afraid to be true to who they really are.

Thousands are saying this movie arrives at the perfect time, and I totally agree. Love, Simon will change 2018 and I am all for it! I give this movie a great, big five out of five stars!
