“East is up” in the new album recently dropped by Twenty One Pilots. Yes, you read that correctly. After about a year hiatus, the iconic duo is back. Trench dropped Oct. 5, 2018, and fans went insane!

Trench connects with their past album, Blurryface, explaining the “aftermath” of that album. “Jumpsuit” came out July 11, 2018, and was one of the teaser songs released alongside a music video. It shows lead vocalist, Tyler Joseph, being chased by a man on a horse that resembles Blurryface. “Nico and the Niners” was released the same day as well.

Like most of their other albums, Twenty One Pilots’ lyrics and messages focus on mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Joseph writes his lyrics in a way that is extremely unique but anybody can understand. Lyrics from “Stressed Out,”one of duos most well known songs from Blurryface, declare: “I was told when I get older all my fears would shrink, but now I’m insecure and I care what people think.”

In the song “Nico and The Niners,” there is a place Joseph refers to as Dema. This place is crucial in giving listeners an idea of the world Joseph has created. It’s described as a place that tries controlling the boys of Twenty One Pilots. Blurryface and his bishops gather there, trying to find a way to control the people of Dema. A lyric states: “When Bishops come together they will know that Dema don’t control us.” The lyrics explain the people are trying to get out of Dema and finally escape Blurryface once and for all.

With 14 tracks, Trench took No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 175,000 copies in its opening week, according to the music news website Headline Planet. The 14 tracks tell an amazing story while offering lyrics that listeners can understand. The duo kicked off their 2018-2019 Bandito Tour selling out a majority of their shows.

Out of the year hiatus, the work the iconic duo put out was more than worth the wait. Trench was a groundbreaking album, giving Twenty One Pilots an opportunity to show off their talent once again.
