
To celebrate National Pi Day, Ms. Carpino, an Indian Trail High School & Academy math teacher, holds an activity that takes a unique spin on a mathematical phenomenon known as Buffon’s Needle Problem. Instead of using the needles in the original theory, Carpino uses hot dogs and celery. The problem consists of throwing the hot dogs and celery sticks at pieces of tape laid on the floor. By calculating the data of whether the hot dogs and celery hit the pieces of tape, students can come up with the exact number of pi. Carpino’s Honors PreCalculus class, lines up and has a blast taking trick shots with the food.
