Princess Diana

“Everyone needs to be valued. Everyone has the potential to give something back.” – Princess Diana

Diana, Princess of Wales, was one of the most adored members of the British royal family until her untimely death in 1997. After her marriage to Charles, Prince of Wales in 1981, Diana expeditiously evolved into an icon of glamour, elegance, and grace. She used her platform to aid numerous charities and organizations, and to bring awareness to important social issues.

Through her charity work, Diana emphasized how royalty, which had formerly been known for its stuffiness, could be in touch with the public. Diana played a significant role in de-stigmatizing people (and children) who were HIV positive by being photographed embracing children who carried the disease, which diminished the worldwide fear that HIV could spread through touch alone. In addition, Diana supported campaigns to ban landmines, provided aid to the homeless, and visited hospitalized children.

Throughout her lifetime, Diana’s compassion, personal warmth, humility, and accessibility earned her the title, “the People’s Princess.”

Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher was the longest serving Prime Minister of England in the 20th century, and also the first woman to hold the office.

Nicknamed “The Iron Lady,” Thatcher implemented conservative economic, social, and political practices known as “Thatcherism.”

Although some of her practices may have been viewed as questionable, Thatcherism to this day remains prominent in British politics.

She led England through some of its lowest economic times, pulling the country through with increased taxes and a decrease in inflation.

Thatcher still remains an icon to all women everywhere, showing that they are competent enough to lead major countries around the world.

Dr. Miranda Bailey

Dr. Miranda Bailey is one of many major characters on the ABC show, “Grey’s Anatomy.” The show is the longest running primetime show on ABC, airing in 2005, and has more than 300 episodes.

Bailey, played by actress Chandra Wilson, has appeared in 337 episodes to date. She is one of four main characters that have been on the show since season one.

Graduating from Wellesley College, Bailey started off as a resident in general surgery but has worked up to the Chief of Surgery as the show has progressed. Miranda Bailey provides an excellent example to young girls to work hard for what you want.

She is a character that shows that while you may have to act tough as a leader, it’s also okay to exhibit a softer side from time to time and that a balance must be found to create harmony between boss and employees.
