Top student athletes make college decisions, continue athletic careers

Trey Meier

The UW-Milwaukee cross country and track commit plans on majoring in physical therapy. Throughout high school, Meier smashed not only the 5k cross country school record time by 47 seconds (16:01.9), but also claimed the 1600m and 3200m records in track, with times of 4:33.57 and 9:56.81, respectively and was named to the first team all-county during the 2017 and 2018 seasons with fourth and first place finishes, respectively. Addition- ally, Meier made three state appearances in cross country during the 2017, 2018, and 2019 seasons, with his top finish being in the 2018 season, when he led the boys team to state for the first time in program history.

Maddie Haines

Haines will attend Indiana University- Purdue University Indianapolis for Division I volleyball in the fall and plans to major in mechanical engineering. A four-year varsity starter, Haines accumulated many awards during her four years, including 2019 second team all-state, 2019 conference player of the year, first team all-conference from 2017-2019, Holy Rosary Female Athlete of the Year nominee, and USA Volleyball high performance player for four years. She holds the Indian Trail career records for most aces (270), kills (1,566), digs (1,348), and blocks (194). Haines led the girls varsity to the sectional finals for the first time in school history.

Devin Rose

Though Rose is undecided, the Communications Academy senior will consider the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater, Carthage College, and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire to play football in the fall and will study communications and broadcasting. Rose was named to the All-Conference honorable mention team and played an integral role as a leader in the team’s playoff run that ended with a loss to Franklin in the second round. Other athletic achievements include Rose’s impressive track career thus far, with a third place 400-meter relay finish at the 2019 WIAA State Championship Meet.

Amara Thompkins

Thompkins plans to attend Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Ill. for Division I soccer and will study environmental science. A versatile player, she is able to play any position but specializes in the central and defensive midfielder positions. Thompkins recently had the most assists in 2019 and made first team all-SEC Conference. Additionally, the Indian Trail senior holds the school record for most goals scored in a single game, as she scored ve times. This feat broke the previous record of three, which was held since 2016. She will take on a leadership position during the upcoming 2020 girls varsity soccer season.
