The year 2020 has been very challenging for many people , but especially for those who play sports.
Yet even with a worldwide pandemic , the WIAA made the decision to continue the golf season.
Tremper teacher Coach Curtis Goettge said he thought allowing students to play golf was a reasonable decision.
“Golf is a sport where you can spread out, be outdoors, and still participate and compete the same as you otherwise would have before the pandemic,” Goettge said. “The players did not touch the rakes in the bunkers, they kept the pins in the cups, and they did not exchange scorecards. Of all of the sports, golf was the one that could handle social distant protocols.”
Covid has impacted a lot of the girls seasons this year.
“COVID-19 has impacted my year by taking away a lot of opportunities. I missed out on a lot of 8th grade activities as last year was my last year of middle school,” Indian Trail Freshman Bailey Schumann said.
“This season has been different than other fall sports I’ve played because our coaches can’t really help as much. They have to stay back and it makes it difficult for them to coach us and for us to learn what they are trying to teach us,” she said.
Although some girls did participate in this year’s season, a lot did make the decision to sit out including Indian Trail Senior Kiara Bucholtz.
“I had a lot going on including hockey, school, the classes I am taking at (UW) Parkside, college applications, ect.” Bucholtz said. “So I made a hard decision and thought it was best for me to miss golf this year.”
Even if Covid does continue, team members would still play next season.
“I would participate next season, even if the pandemic is going on, because I loved learning how to do something new,” Indian Trail Freshman Bailey Schumann said.
“I can continue to get better and I really started to like the sport even with the social distancing.”
Bucholtz had similar feelings.
“If it wasn’t my senior year, yes I would play next season, even if there was a pandemic because it is a distanced sport and was a lot of fun!” she said.
This season has not been as competitive as previous years because many schools have made the decision sit out.
