With numerous setbacks and challenges, the Indian Trail girls Swim and Dive team have still managed to capture wins and even break tough records this season.

The team took fifth place with a score of 211, during a Division 1 sectional meet Nov. 6 and Nov. 7, in Muskego. As they end their 2020 regular season with a record of 5-2 in the Southeast Conference, junior diver Joanne Banaszak, goes to represent the team at the WIAA Division 1 State meet taking place Nov. 15 at Waukesha South Natatorium.

Banaszak broke the school record for diving with a score of 395.20 on Oct. 24. It was previously set by Andie Berhardt with a score of 389.80 back in 2016.

“I was so excited and proud because I had been working hard to break it for the past couple of years and when it finally happened I was so relieved,” Banaszak said.

Her coach, Janine Paskiewicz, praised Joanne’s hard work.

“From day one as a freshman, Joanne showed amazing potential! She has worked very hard year round to improve her dive difficulty and fine tune her dives,” she said. “Joanne is a humble competitor – she has a fierce desire to be her best, yet she remains calm in the face of frustration and supportive as a teammate and competitor.”

With the question of even continuing fall sports, all three Kenosha teams had a two-week delay at the start of the season due to the civil unrest back in August, and then IT went into quarantine due to COVID-19 for another two weeks, creating a start-and-stop pattern for their shortened season.

A whole new system for running practices and meets had to be created.

“We also had to split our team into two groups to minimize the amount of contact and to ensure our athletes the safest environment possible,” Paskiewicz explained. “We had to reconfigure how and where we enter the pool, provide bins and baggies for the girls to put their masks when not swimming or diving.”

Other limitations included no spectators at meets, but each meet offered a live stream of each event as an alternative. And, since there is a limited number of people at social gatherings, team bonding and traditions like pre-meet pasta parties were not able to happen this year.

Overall, this 2020 season for the girls was successful, as they are the No. 1 swim team in Kenosha and remain undefeated against other Kenosha high school teams because of stunning performances and good sportsmanship.
