IT’s Wirch, Gilbert head to Boys State Swim Meet

State qualifiers Ben Wirch and Will Gilbert take a moment between laps as they practice for the Division 1 State Meet in Waukesha this weekend.

Indian Trail’s senior Ben Wirch has qualified to compete in the WIAA Division-1 Boys State Swim Meet for the third consecutive year.

On Jan. 30, Wirch won the 200-yard freestyle and placed second in the 500 freestyle at sectionals in Muskego.

He now advances to the Division-1 State Meet at Waukesha South scheduled for Friday and Saturday (Feb. 5 and 6).

Wirch will be joined at state in the 500 freestyle by junior teammate Will Gilbert. Gilbert finished third at sectionals.

Wirch and Gilbert both set team records — Wirch in the 50 and 100 freestyle, Gilbert in the 500 freestyle.

There was no Kenosha County conference meet this year due to limitations under COVID, but Indian Trail outscored Tremper and Bradford high schools at the sectionals meet on Jan. 30.
