According to members of ITHSA’s student council, the homecoming theme of Emerald City was a result of a close vote. Varied opinions on the theme developed since summer.

Mrs. Droessler, the advisor of the student council says that this year’s theme very well couldn’t have happened. Two main front-runners of the vote for the Homecoming theme were Emerald City and Night in the Bayou.

In years past, homecoming was hosted underneath a tent. Many students on the student council wanted to bring this back but there were many logistical and monetary problems. Mrs. Droessler says, “I liked it outside. Most people who were outside liked outside. But the only thing is that the tent costs like $7,000, so ticket prices would go up. There’s a lot of extra expenses to doing it outside.”

There’s also a huge risk to doing it outside because if it rains you can’t just send everyone inside. So for these reasons, it was concluded that it was the best idea to keep it inside as it has been the last couple of years.

Hunter Lewis, senior, says he likes this year’s theme and that if he had a choice he would make the theme Halloween-related. He had also thought that homecoming didn’t need a theme to be exciting.

Mrs. Droessler, now in her 27th year of teaching, feels that the planning committee learns every year how to make homecoming better.
