At press time Feb. 5, Indian Trail High School & Academy senior Madie Kaelber was about to make Kenosha history. IT’s girl’s varsity basketball team was about to play Bradford High School, where Kaelber was expected to have a record-breaking game.

Going into the game, the General Studies basketball player was just 25 points away from scoring the most points ever accumulated by a high school female player in Kenosha County. Considering that in her previous game Kaelber scored 40 points, breaking the record did not seem unattainable.

Kaelber has accumulated a total of 1,535 points as a varsity player, barely trailing Shoreland Lutheran graduate Ellie Harmeyer, whose record stands as 1,561 points. Kaelber is averaging 23.6 points per game this season and has scored 30 points or more six times.

Kaelber started playing basketball when she was in second grade and has stuck with it. She plans to continue playing at Carthage College next year. To keep herself performing the best she can, Kaelber practices every day after school with her team during the season. But she does not stop there. During the off season, she trains twice a day to keep herself in shape.

Kaelber says there is no great secret to her success.

“I just come out and play my game,” Kaelber said. “I’ve never considered myself a good player, I just come out and do the best I can.”

Kaelber also praised her teammates for being supportive and said setting the record would not only prove herself, but the entire team’s hard work.
