Hamilton mixtape doesn’t “throw away its shot”

By Andie Bernhardt

The Hamilton Mixtape dropped on Dec 2, 2016. Soon after it was released, it flew to the top of the rating charts. The mixtape ended up hitting No. 1, which tends to be unheard of for a remix of a Broadway play. But before we take a closer look at the product, let’s get a quick history lesson on how this music sensation all began.

The mixtape is based off of the Broadway play “Hamilton,” written by Lin Manuel Miranda. The play spans the years when America started and follows the life of founding father Alexander Hamilton, including his untold story. After Hamilton received a record breaking 16 Tony nominations and winning 11 of them, the people craved more. While Miranda had been working on the mixtape since 2015, he finished it a year later, taking Hamilton’s popularity to a whole new level. Thus the Hamilton Mixtape was born.

When I first listened to the Mixtape, I had no idea what to expect. An album about the life of the first Treasury Secretary didn’t sound too appealing, but as soon as the first song played I knew it was going to take music to a whole new level.

The amount of stars performing on this album is unheard of, unless you’re talking about a Christmas album with the whole celebrity mash ups. With stars such as Sia, Usher, Carrie Underwood, Queen Latifah, John Legend, Usher and even… Jimmy Fallon, plus many more, this album is like no other. These stars interpretations of the songs are unbelievable. Kelly Clarksons rendition of the mournful song “It’s Quiet Uptown” will leave you with chills. Songs like Immigrants (We Get The Job Done) embodies all diverse people of America.

My personal favorite song on the Album is “You’ll Be Back” by Jimmy Fallon. Who knew that man had a voice? This album consists of music that the millennial generation craves, from hip hop to pop to R&B, there is something for everyone. This album is incomparable to others. This mixtape is truly inspiring and makes history fun, and it will blow everyone away.

Don’t throw away your shot, listen to it right now.
