Psychological thriller Split delivers big at box office

By Montana Bunner, staff writer

Split, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, is a suspenseful movie involving the psychological aspect of the brain. Kevin Wendle Crumb is a character with dissociative identity disorder; 23 multiple personalities live in Kevin’s head. Dissociative Identity Disorder, also known as multiple personality disorder, is a condition involving distinct identities or personality states that take control of an individual.

The more dominant personalities that live inside Kevin are Dennis, Patricia, and Hedwig. While Dennis is in control, he kidnaps three girls to feed the “Beast.” The beast is the so called 24th personality and shows his true colors towards the end of the lm.

James McAvoy, who plays Kevin Crumb, was outstanding! His acting in this movie was really good, especially con- sidering he had to play one person with multiple personalities. I enjoyed watching Split because of the psychology in it. I don’t think anyone could play the part of Kevin as well as McAvoy does; it is incredible to watch how he switches personalities in a split second.

If you aren’t into blood and guts, this may not be a lm for you. It is not so much gore, but there is a speci c scene towards the end that has some blood. The storyline for this movie takes place in the same world as the movie Unbreakable, which is also another movie created by Shyamalan.

According to Aaron Couch, in a recent The Hollywood Reporter article, Shyamalan has said Split was always part of the Unbreakable world. Kevin Wendle Crumb was a part of the original script for Unbreakable. Shyamalan pulled him out because it just wasn’t balancing right, but many of the scenes in the movie were written 15 years ago when Un- breakable emerged.

As of March 20, the film has grossed about $257 million worldwide. Although, many may not understand the ending of Split, if they have never seen Unbreakable. There also may be a second lm coming out! The director teased about it on Twitter. Overall this incredible lm deserves a 4.5 out of 5 stars.
