Caution: Spoilers lie ahead!
On Oct. 13 I went to see Happy Death Day and I have a few things to say about it.
The plot, Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe), a young college girl, dies repeatedly until she figures out her killer, was good, but the reason why Tree was being killed was disappointing to me.
I had a hard time finding out who the killer was because anyone could’ve been it. I loved seeing Tree grow from scared and terrified to a fighter and determined throughout the movie, but there were so many horror movie cliches that she could’ve avoided when she was with the killer.
For crying out loud, she clicked her car keys in a parking garage and ran to her car as the killer followed it. Why didn’t she just click them as a distraction and go the other way rather than the same? She could’ve found a way out. I thought it was funny when she had to get herself killed because of a mistake she made, and the more she died, the more annoyed and upset she got. She’d wake up and tell the boy in the dorm how she died, but he would be totally lost even though she explained everything the day before, but it never existed.
When Tree thought she killed her killer and woke up in the dorm again, I was a little upset because I thought she actually killed them! The plot twist was a little shocking but then something in my gut told me that they were the real killer.
Tree is satisfied because she knows she finally killed her killer, and when she wakes up in the dorm again, the boy says the same thing from the time loop, but tells her he’s joking, letting her know that the time loop is over.
I enjoyed the movie but there were a few things I would’ve changed, like the part where she goes to dinner with her dad and I cried like a little baby because it was so touching!
All in all, I would give this movie a 3 out of 5 stars and would most likely see it again.
