On Jan. 26, 2018, the third installment of The Maze Runner series, The Death Cure, hit theatres. After waiting three years, fans were not disappointed with the final movie! The budget for the movie was $62 million, and the box office to date is $105.5 million.
Following Thomas’s (Dylan O’Brien) plan to save Minho (Ki Hong Lee) from World Catastrophe Killzone Department, also known as WCKD, the film has nonstop action that is edge-of-your-seat quality. We see some familiar Greenies, or those who were originally in the maze, such as Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), Frypan (Dexter Darden), Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), and duo Brenda (Rosa Salazar) and Jorge (Giancarlo Esposito).
The group goes on a dangerous journey to save Minho from WCKD’s testing for a cure. Minho is immune to the Flare, a virus that slowly eats away the brain, and those infected become bloodthirsty humans that rely on cannibalism to survive. Those infected with the Flare are known as Cranks. Teresa betrayed the group in The Scorch Trials, the previous film/book, and works with WCKD on the experiments on the immunes.
Thomas, Newt, Brenda, Frypan, and Jorge go through Crank-infested tunnels and get to the Last City, where Minho is being held. Janson (Aidan Gillen), a high-ranking official in WCKD, is notified that Thomas and his group are in the city and he pursues to find and kill them all before they come up with another plan to save their friend. They’re reunited with ex-Glader Gally (Will Poulter) and he helps them get into the city through an underground passage.
I was pleased with this movie and I think it is the best one out of the three in the series. The acting is amazing, the setting is breathtaking, and the chaos that unravels blew my mind! The ending made me cry because I had been a fan of the franchise and it was sad to see it come to an end. Book readers know the real reason why we all cried and seeing it on the screen made my heart ache.
The Maze Runner is one of the best dystopian series. It beats The Hunger Games and Divergent with its never-ending, jaw-dropping moments and scary beasts to haunt people for days.
I also love how this series is about saving friends and each other, not some ridiculous love story like most films. Thomas cares more about his friends than he does Brenda or Teresa, though he’s still fond of Brenda. Thomas goes out of his way and risks his life to save Minho and that really sticks out to me because that’s what one should do with their friends rather than a girl.
To make a long story short, this movie packed a whole bag of emotions and action and brought it to my front door! I was not disappointed with this film and I would love to see it again!
