13 Reasons Why: What to expect from Season 2

By Jasmine Pascual, Staff Writer

Millions of people have watched the hit Netflix original series 13 Reasons Why. It’s one of the most controversial shows to air on Netflix, based off the book by Jay Asher.

The series left off on several cliffhangers to end Season 1, leaving fans anticipating more. The show pulled major emotional heart strings and felt real to fans, which drew them in for more episodes.

Season 2 is set to released in late spring or early summer. There’s no specific release date for the new season, but lots of fans are waiting for answers to questions left unresolved from Season 1. Just to name a few, Alex Standall’s (Miles Heizer) fate is in question after a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Will Jessica Davis (Alisha Boe) be pressing charges against Bryce Walker (Justin Prentice) for sexual misconduct? And why does Tyler Down (Devin Druid) having an assumed hit-list against other Liberty High School students?

There also may be a time jump, a couple months after where Season 1 left off.

Seven new cast members are joining to add to the new story kicking off Season 2. After the heartbreaking suicide of Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), it left a question in the air whether or not Hannah’s character will return in Season 2. To answer that question, yes, Hannah will be in the new season.

Season 2 explores a lot more of the other characters and their journeys. The new season will display another side of Hannah that wasn’t shown in Season 1. But ultimately, the season is about letting Hannah go.

After all the criticism Season 1 attracted, Season 2 won’t show another suicide. Not particularly because of the criticism, but because it doesn’t go along with the creator’s storyline. For the more sensitive episodes, Netflix has put out on-screen warnings before each episode. The new season is said to be just as provocative and unexpected.

Although there couldn’t be much justice for Jeff Atkins (Brandon Larracuente), writers hint certain justice to be made for Hannah during her trial.

Also, showrunner Brian Yorkey hinted about past storylines being told by other characters from their perspectives, showing that Hannah is actually more complicated than she appeared in Season 1.

Yorkey also hints that instead of cassette tapes, a new technology will be in place.

Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) is said to still be healing from Hannah’s death and he’s struggling with returning to his normal life.

It’s uncertain if the creators and writers decide on continuing the series for a third season, but fans will be happy to hear that there will be no cliffhangers from Season 2, assuming all our questions following Season 1 will be resolved in Season 2.
