Nugget Quest

By Adelina Gonzalez, Staff Writer

When you think of your childhood lunch time meals what do you see?

I know I cannot be the only one who revels in the memory of sitting down to a plate full of curly fries and dino nuggets. Kids my age, were raised on the rising popularity of fast food as meal substitutions when our families were on the run.

I think it’s only natural to wonder of the many nuggets we pursued, which one is truly the best of the best.

Is the king of fast food McDonald’s chicken nugget happy meals? Is it our ever-so-fresh and wonderful Wendy’s nuggets? Perhaps frozen food trumps all and the dino nuggets will reign supreme. Who knows, that’s what this journey is all about.

So to clarify, yes, this is a review on chicken nuggets and yes, I take this very seriously.

Now I, knowing I am a clearly biased person, am a firm believer in unbiased fair journalism.  When it comes to the portrayal of something as serious and factual as my opinion on the best chicken nuggets one can never be too careful.

So to check my bias I came up with a grading system for these nuggets. Each nugget is graded on a scale of 1-5 in the categories of price per nugget, taste, texture, smell, and wait time for said nuggets to be prepared.

Myself and three others went out and gathered chicken nuggets from the following fast food chains in the general Kenosha/Racine area: KFC, Chick-Fil-A, McDonald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s. We each scored the nuggets in every category and the final verdict was given based on the averaging together of our scores.

For the sake of fun even though it isn’t a major fast food chain item, I purchased a bag of Tysons dino nuggets from my local Walmart and put my nostalgic taste buds to the test to see if the beloved dino nugs can hold their own against these fast food giants.

My fellow nugget eaters and I set out our nuggets one brand of nugget at a time, making comments and grading nuggets one by one. We came to this conclusion:

In the categories chosen, the winners are as follows: in first place Chick-Fil-A, the runner up was surprisingly Wendy’s chicken nuggets and the bronze goes to my beloved dino nugs.

This was a long journey, as I had to sit in five drive-thrus for an hour and a half, but it proved rewarding. Even though in terms of flavor Chick-Fil-A came out on top, my nostalgic heart will always belong to my childhood dino nuggets.
