When you think of school lunch food, your initial thoughts may be somewhere along the lines of “yuck” or “gross” as this is the typical reaction from most high school students.
But is school lunch really as bad as what it’s made out to be, or have we just assimilated into the negative opinion?
Growing up, our pliable minds have been exposed to movies and television shows with the common cliche that school lunches are disgusting. Horror stories of “mystery meat” and milk cartons way past their expiration dates as well as students under social pressure to believe the bias and opinions of their peers only further contribute to the negative stigma.
Well here’s an unpopular opinion: they’re not actually that bad.
While the meal of a specific lunch day might not always suit your tastes, students can still select from a variety of different protein, fruits, drinks, and snacks.
For those students who have specific dietary needs or restrictions, who are pickier about what’s being served, or who just like to complain, a better alternative may be to do what the elementary schools call “cold-lunch,” meaning pack your own. Whether you pack it in the morning or the night before, put in snacks and sandwiches that may better suit your tastes or dietary needs.
Students who may not have food at home may feel more limited when eating the school lunch, but there’s nothing physically wrong with the food that the school provides.
