While school lunches can actually be delicious, the lack of options is something harder to chew.
With main courses usually containing dairy or meat, Indian Trail lunches don’t have many options for vegans, vegetarians or students concerned about what’s actually in the food they eat.
Unclear nutrition labels in our lunchroom make it hard to tell what’s in our food. Without the knowledge of what we’re eating, it’s hard for anyone to track nutrition, especially for kids with allergies.
The pre-made salads and sandwiches lack detailed description of what is in them. It’s hard to find that perfect salad or sandwich. Many students pick out what they don’t like in salads and throw it away, which adds to the 254 million tons of trash Americans throw away in a year alone.
Some students have suggested it would be beneficial to have a more detailed menu or a salad bar where you can pick and choose what you like. School lunches need can pick and choose what you like. School lunches need more variety for students who are diet conscious. Such a change could also bring more business.
From moldy apples to arachnids in our milk, quality control is also an ongoing issue. We all have heard the horror stories. Now is the time to change that. Whenever there is such a problem, report it to the person in charge of lunches.
More options and clearer explanation of what’s in those choices would make our second meal of the day easier to swallow.
