The book, Little Women, is a classic that I know most have either read, heard of or even indulged in the movies. Though there have been several movies and remakes of the original book.
The newest 2019 movie has to be my favorite. The book was ahead of its time, tackling such controversial topics such as feminism and women’s empowerment with its protagonist, a young lady with the nickname of Jo. Jo is the second oldest of a clan of four. She narrates the movie whilst telling the story of what growing up was like for her and her family.
The lm portrays the Civil War time period beautifully as Greta Gerwig directs this piece of art. Producers spent $40 million bringing the book to life, and it is very apparent by the set and the props they used. The costumes are my favorite part of the lm because of their carefully selected intricate pieces. Gerwig told VOGUE that she hired carefully selected designer Jacquline Durran, who is known for her costume work in Atonement and Pride and Prejudice.
But best of all was Gerwig’s casting. She chose people whom were climbing the ladder within the film industry such as Florence Pugh (The Falling 2014), Timothee Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name 2017, Beautiful Boy 2018, The King 2019), Saoirse Ronan (Lovely Bones 2009, Hanna 2011, and Lady Bird 2017) and Emma Wat- son. A lot of people were happy to see Timothee Chalam- et in a new movie, and Saorise is a good t as Jo March. Their personalities are almost the same, and Ronan has played in period pieces before. Chalamet and Ronan had worked together in other movies as well like Lady Bird.
The movie deserves four and a half out of ve stars. I say that with great confidence since the movie — although long — is full of drama and romance which I know others will enjoy. This lm has definitely lived up to its name within the Little Women trilogy.
