Think about the theater experience. The scent of popcorn. The cold soda pressing on your hand. But the idea of seeing a film on the big screen is what makes that experience enjoyable. It’s what makes people coming back. Every season, at least one film draws people in. However, there does seem to be a season for this. That happens to be the summer. This summer in particular was a big one for theater-goers. “Deadpool and Wolverine”, “Inside Out 2”, and “Twisters” just to name a few.

According to many in Hawk Nation, “Deadpool and Wolverine,” the newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, seems to have had the biggest impact of the summer, even though it was the box office’s second-place winner. “It brought so many past Marvel characters into the newer MCU, though I wish it had brought in more. I loved the amount of character cameos that were in it,” says Camden Grund, general studies senior.

This has been a long-awaited movie, so bringing in some surprise characters may have come as a shock to some, even if it was an exciting thing. “I enjoyed Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. . . .They made a very funny duo, with Jackman being the more serious and depressing guy, and Reynolds was still able to give enough comic relief that it balances it out in a good way,” says general studies senior, Talon Hannaman.

Though it was a commercially and critically successful movie, every good movie does come with some negative aspects that may have left some viewers unhappy. “I felt there could have been stronger characters that could have been used as the villain. . . . I felt as if she was just there to move the movie along.” Jae Kaiser, general studies senior.

As widely impactful as it was for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it also broke the record for highest-grossing R-rated film, just beating out 2019’s Joker, showing how much of a chokehold superhero movies have on an audience and even in the age of streaming, if the movie is exciting enough, or there is enough people around praising it, there will always be a pull to that full theater experience.
