Even after the exceptional game with Florida State University defeating Auburn University in a great comeback by quarterback Jameis Winston, you can ask almost every college football fan and they will say that they are glad the Bowl Championship Series is gone. Finally the championship can be decided on who is the best team and not which team looks better on a computer. The controversial system is gone and next year a four-team playoff will decide which team will win the National Championship.
The problems with the BCS system started with the conference affiliation. You really had no chance in the BCS unless you were part of the six major confer- ences. In years past, Boise State or Texas Christian University could have beat anyone and this year University of Central Florida proved that as well. Also, the system looks way too much into the margin of victory. Oregon State University had a margin of victory of 25 this season which lead them to being the No. 3 ranked team when they played Stanford University who had a margin a victory of 13 and was ranked No. 5 and looked to be an underdog.
Stanford ended up killing Oregon 20-26, in a game which Oregon scored all of its 20 points in the fourth quarter, when the game was decided. Stanford ended up winning the Pac 12 this season by just beating opponents by small margins while Oregon continued 30-point blow outs.
Humans were way too involved in choosing the championship game. People sat around the TV waiting to see what a computer and a couple of voters decided on who should play, when they should play to decide who is better.
That’s what we have now. The top four teams in the country will play in a two- game playoff. They would go to the bowl that is hosting the games that year, the bowls have three-year rotation on who does the bowls, and they play to decide who goes to the National Championship. The games will be hosted like bowl games with the teams coming in early and doing media activities but it won’t quite be a bowl game.
This system is an improvement but an eight-team playoff would be better. It would eliminate the aspect of the Bowl games, but without eight teams I’m still not sure if the best teams are playing every year. This year Oklahoma State Uni- versity or Alabama State University could have beat Florida State in a game if given the opportunity, but they wouldn’t in the new playoff because they are outside the top four. Florida State almost lost to Auburn, but Auburn barely beat Alabama with a 108-yard field goal return with no time left. That’s how close it was this season.
Well, they did clean up the system and made it better. College football still has a lot to improve. They still need to fix more than just the playoff system, but that would be a good start.
