Rings takes bold step forward, creates new form of horror

Some mysteries are mysteries for a reason.

They reveal something, the horrible truth, that would bring another to their demise.

Rings, released Feb. 3, 2017, reveals a mystery similar to the statements above. This mystery-thriller genre movie has had a rather rough start, re- sulting in a few poor reviews. Although as time’s pressed on, the lm has turned into quite the success among Google Play users.

From the acting to the surroundings, down to the smallest ray of light, there’s no doubt in the mind that this movie is going to supply the audi- ence with a performance that will be hard to match in the future.

Let’s take a brief look into the sets:

Almost awless. The surroundings draw the viewer in and feed the in- tensity of the situation. While the low light effects may bother some, they truly make a difference and empower the experience. There were times these effects were overused and used incorrectly, but these moments could be overlooked.
One thing that cannot be overlooked are problems with the plot.

More times than not, something pulls the viewer out of it until some sound effect or ‘out of place’ noise captures the viewer’s attention again. The plot de nitely could have been improved; the writers seemed to be torn between making Rings into a mystery, a comedy, or a horror lm. In- stead of deciding on one or two of them, they attempted to meld all three genres into it.

While there are more negatives than positives, those who enjoy hor- ror, mystery and comedy should give Rings a shot. Try not to go into the theaters with a “another thriller-mystery movie” mindset because it may cause some disappointment.

All and all, Rings deserves a fair review. It has great potential, it just needs some touch-ups. With that said, the movie gets a rating of three out of ve stars.
